It doesn't require a special controller card for the IIgs.
I used to use one on a IIgs. The card is required only
for the IIe to use a 3.5" drive and it is labelled LIRON
on one side and "Apple 3.5 disk drive controller" on
the other side of the card. It uses a 4:1 interleave whereas
the Apple 3.5" drive uses a 2:1 interleave. The main
difference is that the Unidisk has its own processor
on board and the Apple 3.5" disk is controlled by
the 65C02/65812 processor.
