Don't pay $20US each, I'd say $6-$8US would be about right. In Australia we
can buy them from electronics outlets like Disk Smith Electronics or Jaycar,
and even a lot of battery specialists. They sell here for about $13AUD
(halve that for USD).
One thing you probably realise is the ROM-1 uses a battery with axial leads
which can be fitted a couple of ways:
1) cut out the old battery near the battery & leave leads sticking out of
the motherboard. then straighten up the leads in the motherboard. then place
in the new battery (the right way !) and wrap the new leads around the old
ones a few times then cut off any excess. You can add solder if you wish.
2) have someone solder it in properly. I prefer this option.
For the ROM-3 the battery is the same as the Macs with standard battery
terminals.
