More development, Better graphics, More horse power, More supported software, More supported external devices. At the time I made a choice not to use Windoze. You are right it was awful. It still is.Meanwhile, many of the Apple II users who remained had decided that if the promised ROM 3 were anything short of a major upgrade, they were 'out of here' and off to PC-ville. (Hardly anyone, except some magazine editors, talked about going to a Mac.) The ROM 3 proved to be a very minor upgrade; and, users deserted in droves. Why would GS/OS users leave the Apple world and go PC? That would have been a backwards step since a decent version of Windows wouldn't be available until 1991 (Win 3.1) and then it was a far cry from the Finder.
My thoughts at the time is I can get a 386 where I have complete support. I can stick with my GS and not get any help except through the newsgroups. Or I can get a Mac at twice the price with less expansion capabilities and the possibility Apple would choose not to support this machine either. I was right. Although development on the Apple continued through third party channels (thanks guys) it could not keep up with the PC. Apple has since ceased support of its 68k Macs and some PowerMacs.
To bring it back on topic. A friend has found an 8Mb RAM card. It works in his ROM 01 but not in his ROM 03.
