As you say the official documentation isn't particularly helpful. My
understanding is that the LC/IIe card, in conjunction with the host
Mac, emulates a "real" IIe with a "real" workstation (Localtalk) card
in a "slot" defined in the control panel. Because the LC/IIe card has
no network interface of its own, it uses the interface on the Mac. This
is normally the Mac's built-in LocalTalk interface but it could be a
SCSI/Ethernet interface, as a previous csa2 poster has remarked.

It doesn't seem plausible that the LC/IIe card will be able to login to
the Mac which hosts it. Surely the Mac and the LC/IIe will be sharing
the same AppleTalk address? I'll have a look at the manual again.

I don't see how you could try to use the LC/IIe card without using the
software for the "real" IIe workstation (LocalTalk) card. Apple don't
include a login or chooser app as part of the stanard LC/IIe software.
Again the manual and Tech Info Library are lousy on this point.
