Maybe. I only ever had a 1704(?) and a 1084, and those had the switch
either on the front panel next to the the contrast etc., or a little
push-btton one near the jacks on the back. Maybe the 1901 doesn't have
one. An additional complication comes from the fact that Commodore
constantly shopped around with regard to components and licensed
manufacturers, so there are lots of variations even with the same
model number.

That's right, maybe they didn't add backwards compatibility until
later. The 1084 was sold as a universal Commodore monitor.

Digital RGBI is limited by its very nature to 16 specific colors,
those also found on CGA PCs. In fact the connector on the 1901 is CGA
compatible.

I never had a IIgs but I believe its output signals are very similar
to those of an Amiga.
