No it was not on the original disk.  

This mod causes DOS to ignore some errors.  This modification could
correct the occasional bad disk by recovering the data in a sector on
the new copy.  Anyone who has used COPYA can attest to it's lack of
skill in copying anything but perfectly normal diskettes.

An alternat purpose would be to normalize a protected disk.  Potentially
this method of copying could capture the sector data from a protected
disk and allow it to be hacked.
