Nope - you can boot directly into ProDOS-8.

ProDOS 1.0.x and 1.1.x only include a driver for the Thunderclock.

ProDOS-8 1.2 added support for the IIgs, including a native clock
driver.  The appropriate driver is moved into the language card area at
boot time, according to the type of machine.

The IIgs clock does provide the year, so there is no need to patch
ProDOS-8 every seven years if you have a IIgs.
