How about when the government is doing it?  The Constitution grants
the government the power to grant copyrights for a limited time --
indefinite extensions don't cut it.  Taking works back OUT of the
public domain also doesn't cut it.  And then there's the DMCA, which
legally prevents you from defeating copy protection measures which
prevent you from doing that which other copyright law protects your
right do do.  If the government doesn't feel constrained to make its
laws according to its charter, why (aside from force) should anyone
feel constrained to follow those laws.

Legality does not define morality.
