I expect not.  Somewhere around the higher-numbered 6xx's, the
DeskJets became pretty dependent on the host machine for font
rendering, and no Apple II driver means no operation.

A good test for Apple II compatibility is the ability of the printer
to print directly from DOS on a PC.  If it can do this, then it can
print characters, not just dots.
