Mark,

There are two different ways you can do localtalk networks...

1. The way you are thinking about which has drop boxes that use
standard phone lines for making the connections, and

2. The actual Apple localtalk cabling which used drop boxes that
had two mini-din 3 connectors and used actual Apple localtalk
(read expensive) cabling. The drop boxes came in two different
flavors...a DB-9 male with two mini-din-3 female connectors and
a mini-din-9 male with two mini-din-3 female connectors.

I currently have my apartment wired up with a mix of both...there was
an adapter cable that would go between Phonenet and Apple's localtalk
cabling, so overall they are fully compatible with each other, they
just used different connectors and cabling.
