If it works with the /SYSTEM disk, then it appears to be a software problem on
the hard drive. There are different parts of the operating system controlling
fonts. Try reinstalling the operating system on the hard drive and then boot
that. Try to copy it to new parts of the hard drive to avoid putting it on what
might be bad blocks. Try just copying the fonts from the the /SYSTEM disk onto
the hard drive and see if that fixes the boot.
Try booting from /SYSTEM disk and then going directly to the control panel and
see if that works before trying something else. The system could get unstable
after trying other tests. A lot of the system tools like quickdraw are probably
on the /SYSTEM disk as they were upgraded to ram and are not used in ROM
anymore.
