Missing Quickdraw text in System 6

Something funny has happened to one of my GS's. Funny-strange, not
funny-ha-ha. :)
This has only just started to happen, it was working in the same
configuration before.
When I boot my Focus 500MB with System 6.0.1 the desktop comes up with no
text being drawn AT ALL. Otherwise it still seems to come up and all the
menu's seem to work, except I can't read black and white blocks, just use my
memory of where the menu options are. All the icon's look OK, & the mouse
works.

The only other card in this machine is a 4MB RAM card GS JUICE PLUS.

- I moved the HDD to the other GS with 8Mb Sirius RAM, and it works fine.
- I tried the HDD in slot 2 and slot 6 in the original machine with the same
problem.
- I ran a memory test on the 4MB RAM card and it passed.
- I re-seated the ROM chip (ROM1), although I havn't tried to swap it with
the other GS yet. (both ROM1's). I am still suspicious of the ROM chip.
- I booted the /SYSTEM disk from the 6.0.1 floppy and all the text comes up
OK, and it look good but when I tried to run a HDD disk-verify on the first
partition it locked up part way through, and I had to reboot.
- I tried to enter the control panel (ctrl-AO-Esc) and I got a 40 col crash
with some random chars on the screen. again I had to re-boot.

Now it looks like I'm down to the Motherboard or less likely the Power
Supply. I am also suspicious of the RAM on the motherboard, but don't know
how to test that.
Anyone seen this before, or know what's going on. Why would I just lose the
Quickdraw text on the desktop and not the icons. ? ? ?

confused,
