IIc Questions

I pulled my old IIc out of storage to run an application that was on a 5
1/4" disk. I got a Could Not Load ProDos message on this disk, an
Appleworks install disk and the ProDos Users Disk. From this little
info, can anyone tell if the internal disk drive is bad, or just needing
cleaning? If the internal drive is bad, can I boot from an external 5
1/4" drive?

Also, I think I remember the IIc needed a "special" 3 1/2". Is this
correct, and if so, what is the drive's designation?
