Can't see netatalk share from IIGS...what's wrong?

I just got all the bits together to see if I can get my GS talking to my
Linux server, which is running netatalk.  The Linux end is running netatalk
1.4b2, with only home directories shared.  Plain-text passwords have been
left enabled, and I think I have the correct options to enable sharing to
Apple II systems.  

My AppleVolumes.default has just this line in it:

~ options=prodos

My afpd.conf has just this line in it:

chakotay -address 192.168.100.1

Sitting between the GS and the Linux server (a homebrew K6-III-450, if
you're interested) is a Quadra 610 running MacOS 7.5.5 and LocalTalk Bridge. 
It's connected to the server via Ethernet and to the GS via PhoneNet. 
AppleTalk is enabled on both machines (had to shift my RamFAST to slot 1 so
that AppleTalk would work).

The Mac has no problem at all logging into netatalk; it'll swap files all
day.  If I share the Mac's hard drive, the GS is able to access it. 
However, while the GS does show the Linux server as an available server, it
only wants to log in as a guest.  Since I have guest logins disabled, this
is somewhat less than useful.

Since the server is showing up, it would seem that LocalTalk Bridge is
working correctly, leaving the problem as something in the netatalk config. 
The documentation for netatalk appears to be fairly thin, especially with
regard to setting it up for Apple II clients.  (The Apple II FAQ, BTW, is
silent on netatalk.)  Someone else must've tried getting this working by
now; what am I doing wrong to keep my GS and netatalk from talking to each
other?
