There could be any of several things wrong.  Fortunately many are easily 
corrected.  I have been repairing my drives for a decade.

Find a computer repair book, perhaps in a public library, and have fun 
learning about what is inside them.  I think you will enjoy digging into 
the machine for a drive repair.
