Ben:
Something I forgot to mention previously, do not pull on the wire of the
CPU connector to remove it. You can tear the wire inside where you
can't see it. Use picks or small screwdrivers, pliers, or special tools
to remove the connectors from the board. (I use a small pocked flat
blade screwdriver and a dental pick.)
I believe you may have a bad CPU cable connetion at the CPU socket or at
the TWGS board. (Or a damaged cable.) The reason why ProDOS 8 may not
have errors is because it doesn't use all the wires or memory lines
where GSOS generaly will. ProDOS8 also has no error checking, GS/OS is
much more sensitive to memory problems.
Try clening the connectors first. Carefully remove the card and the
cable and clean the pins on the card and the CPU cable with a hard
rubber eraser. These erasers are easiest to locate attached to the end
of a number 2 pencil. Use _light pressure_ to scrub the metal surfaces
to make them shiney. If you find (or cause) any kinks in the pins, you
may be looking at a new cable being required, so be careful about
cleaning.
BTW, it wouldn't hurt to rub down the connectors with Everclear brand
pure grain alcohol. It doens't leave any residue and strips the oils
left by fingers. Use a q-tip to wipe each side of all connector pins.
Make sure they are absolutely dry before reassembly and testing. You
can also flush the sockets with everclear, but I recommend you follow
that with compressred air to make sure the alcohol gets removed and/or
evaporated.
Reassemble and try it again.
Thankx,
Ed
