I do believe I've seen a MicroDrive Turbo bringing up a real IIGS faster than that, and my Focus isn't far off. I haven't tried the CFFA3000 on a GS yet, but there's a huge bottleneck in device initialization that makes the CFFA3000 far slower on initial boot, and it seemed like the Focus was faster on the //e.
I would expect modern flash-based solutions to be faster, if they're optimized for speed, simply due to the lower latency - you don't need caches if you can get data back from the device as fast as you can shove it down the bus.

Based on my experiences with my CFFA3000 in my //e, I could believe that.
FWIW, this is what my actual GS config is, to give some perspective on what I picked:
ROM 3 (but will be ROM 01 once I have a replacement board)
Uther
Zip 12.5/64
SoundMeister (that I rarely end up using)
Focus
RAM-GS 4 MiB
2x Apple 3.5
2x Apple 5.25
AppleColor RGB
System Saver GS
