Shock of shocks the QC10 works fine! Although I must say that
setting it up is daunting. I first got the idea that the way to go
was to make a lot of floppy-sized ProDOS volumes (like an Apple Corvus
Omnidrive). However, that now seems less attractive since you have
to mount and unmount each one to access them. Better large drives
with directories, I think.
For those not familiar, the Quark QC10 is a 10MB hard drive designed to work
through the floppy port of a IIc, IIe, Mac, III or II+
Here's a question, though: although the drive worked fine on the floppy
port of my IIc (as S5,D1 and S5,D2) no luck on a IIc Plus.
Just doesn't see it in any configuration.
With the IIc, it works correctly as follows:
IIc > QC10 > 5.25 drive.
The IIc internal = S6D1
Quark = S5D1 and S5D2
The 5.25 daisy-chained to the Quark = S6D2
With the IIc Plus I tried chaining the Quark to an Apple 3.5 drive
IIc Plus > 3.5 > QC10
thinking that this would make the QC10 an S2 device, as the first external
"5.25" drive in the chain (since I can configure the Quark software to
address the drive as a slot 2 device). However, no go with either an Apple
3.5 or Unidisk 3.5 in that position.
The only thing the manual says is that in a IIe the QC10 expects the floppy
controller to be physically in S6 (the physical slot expectation of the
device is apparently *not* configurable).
I know this sounds confusing, but if anyone has any insights as to why this
doesn't work, it would be appreciated.
