No, that's not it.  I have a TWGS.  There is no socket for the original
chip, but there are two 40-pin Molex-type connectors.  One is where the
ribbon connector attaches to the CPU connector; the other appears to be
identical, and if I remember correctly is not documented in the manual.

This is correct.  The Vulcan hard drive replaces the power supply and
includes a higher-capacity power supply and a fan.  It may be possible to
upgrade to a larger IDE drive, but I don't know how to tell what drives
will work and what drives don't.  What I did with mine was to take the
20Mb drive out of my Vulcan's case and replace it with a 250Mb SCSI drive,
and replace my Vulcan controller with an Apple Hi-Speed SCSI card.  Then I
put the Vulcan card in another computer and worked out a means for
mounting the Vulcan drive in the other machine.  In my case, I managed to
swap my Vulcan GS controller for a Vulcan ][e controller and I found room
for the drive under the keyboard in one of my ][e's.  8-)
