Shell is indeed excellent. One of the best parts is that it's
platform-independant.
I collect a variety of golden-age computers, and all I need is a modem and a
com program, and I can access the net. Often, that's the easiest way to
transfer files, like the utilities to use other methods for transferring
files.
Fortunately, much of the net is run by geeks who appreciate the power of the
shell, so many smaller ISP's offer shell access at no extra cost along with
PPP for the masses.
