One of the things I missed the most about using the old Apple ][ was the
sound the the disk drive just chugging along track to track. You knew it
was working hard! It's such a soothing sound. And when I added the 8"
drive for my CP/M work and it was chugging along you knew you had a
machine, and a machine it was since due to its sheer size you needed a
lube kit once in a while. I liked working on the Apple because I knew
where I stood with it, I understood it and it performed as I specified.
Now modern days, I discover that our hardware even though we have some
billihertz CPU running faster than a Cray system. The hardware is more
capable, smaller and quieter. This is an improvement. BUT! When you
operate your PC these days do you know whats really going on in your PC?
You might be reading your email but what else is going on? I am
generally happy with our modern technology but I just don't trust my PC.
"Trusty" now thats a word a lot of Apple ][ people know! I really love
working on my Apple ][ again, it reminds me of the days of when I still
had hair.
