If you can track down a StyleWriter (the original, not one of its
successors), it'll plug right in and provide good print quality for 16-bit
apps. If 8-bit compatibility is important to you (it would be to me), you
might be better served by an older-model (or even some current-model) HP
DeskJet or something similar.
On a somewhat related note, I know there was a PostScript "Imagewriter
emulator" provided with the Apple LaserWriter to enable printing from most
8-bit II apps (send the emulator to the printer and tell your apps you're
using an Imagewriter). I have an Imagewriter and a StyleWriter available,
but I also have a Lexmark Optra Color 40 hooked to one of my Linux boxen.
Since this is a PostScript-compatible printer, what are the odds that the
Imagewriter emulator would run on it if it can be obtained somehow? It'd be
nice to have the capability to print from old apps to this printer.
(Hacking Imagewriter II support for color printing into it would be even
cooler. :-) )
