Why was it so messy? Have you used that tool from Radio Shaft (Radio Shack)
that is a solder sucking iron. The metal tip is hot and hollow. I have used it
to scavenge lots of parts including 40 pin dips! You should first go through
and apply solder to all the pins to get them ready, press down on the bulb, then
place the iron over the pin for a couple-three-four seconds and then let go of
the bulb. It will suck all the solder off the pin and out of the hole. Once
you get good at using it you can sometimes suck all the solder off and the part
will fall out of the holes! It is the best desoldering tool I have used that
costs less than $10. The best one I have used was a Haco (is that how you spell
it?) and it cost hundreds. Good luck.
