I don't know about ideal, but I use a com program on each end, connected via
a null modem cable.  Mlink is an old shareware Windows com program that is
pretty convenient and supports Zmodem, and Agate is a downloadable Apple II
com program with Zmodem.
I run it at 9600 bps, and send files in batches. If you are sending large
amounts, just leave it running overnight.
