It won't work in any 8-bit programs, since they're hard coded to use the

In IIgs programs it _can_ work. If the joystick you have emulates a mouse
and the game allows you to use a mouse it should work fine. Otherwise it
won't work without a driver. I don't think there was ever a standard for ADB
joysticks (a poor decision on Apple's part), so each brand requires a
different driver. Since none of the ADB joysticks were ever intended (by the
manufacturers!) to be used on the IIgs, none of them ever wrote drivers for
it, plus very few IIgs programs allowed for input drivers.
The only one that I know of was Treasures from Heaven, it included drivers
for Apple II joystick, keypad or keyboard. In theory others could be added.
