If it's possible to replace the chip, and if the chip is a standard size,
then there is almost certainly some kind of programmable logic that could be
substituted. If you are right, then reverse engineering the chip really is
the problem. From what I've read, it's possible, but requires the resources
of some major company. Any idea just how complex the fpi or cya is? And is
there an fpga in the correct package size capable of reproducing the
functionality? It's an interesting dream, anyway.
