The most you can install is 8 MB. The ROM is hardcoded with this maximum in
mind.

The processor can address 16 MB of memory; the 65816's address space is 16
MB. However, Apple's design of the Apple IIgs effectively limits it to 8
MB.
For everyday use, 4 MB is plenty.
