Re: ProDOS...
My mistake. I didn't intend to limit the scope of free software to
strictly GPL. There are other less limiting methods. From my point
of view, such an application could only benefit from the sharing of
source code. At least it would be around in later years for others
to enjoy or improve, unlike the vast majority of the current Apple2
software. Some of which is or will be lost forever. Vanquished into
the realms of our memories, soon to be forgotten altogether.
BTW, you can find the GPL or other freeware copyrights all over the
internet. A large library of software exist because of them and the
folks who believe in them. I have been in the II family for a very
long time. There has always been for one reason or another, the need
to protect 'their' code and keep it proprietary. Well, it's theirs
and they have that right, but IMHO, this is bad for the Apple II
community. At least for the current one, that is. There is already a
shortage of programmers for our computers, and we all know that II
programming doesn't pay well, if at all. For the most part, these
systems are now solely in the realm of the hobbyist or die hard fan.
As well, information is difficult to come by and (again IMHO) it
should be shared by any interested party in the hopes that someone
will take advantage of this knowledge and produce new programs.
Are we so content with the II software we currently have that new
programs no longer interest us? Well, not I, but I know I can't do
it alone. There are many II users who know a lot more than I and I
can only hope they will be willing to share.

Thank you for your time and interest. I hope it was helpful
or at least interesting.
