Actually, there were several brands of early floppy drives (non Apple) that
did use jumpers to control the configuration, much like the Master/Slave
jumpers on an IDE hard drive. Much to my chagrin, I've run into a few of
these over the years, and they led to much frustration when I was working as
a repair tech. Nothing like trying to do someone a favor and having it turn
into a HUGE waste of time. I've gotten into the habit of checking the web
first before I try setting up older looking 5.25 hard drives. I can't
remember any to the brands but they are out there.
