The dangerous part must relate to battery disposal. Like, you would NOT
want to bash the old battery with a hammer or toss it into a fire.

To expand a bit on Tony's directions ...

First, if your IIgs still retains the Control Panel settings you like,
it could be worthwhile to jot down the settings or use a program which can
save and later restore the settings. (For info about such a program see the
FAQs at http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2HDWHACK.html#008 .)

With the computer turned OFF, you need to unplug the AC power cord from
the Power Supply and lift out the Power Supply in order to get to the
battery.

Before snipping any leads, it helps to identify the "+" side of the
battery on the motherboard and mark this side on the motherboard with
white-out or some other marker.

Snip the leads to the old battery leaving about 3/4 inch of lead on the
motherboard.

Trim the leads on the new battery to a length that allows easily
reaching the leads on the motherboard.

Use spring connectors (like those you can probably find at Radio Shack)
to join the leads-- make sure the new battery's "+" lead is the one joined to
the marked ("+") lead on the motherboard.

Or, you can solder the new battery leads to the leads on the
motherboard. (If you solder the leads, pre-tin each of the four wires with
good quality solder using longnosed pliers to grip the lead to avoid
over-heating the battery or motherboard connection.)

Make sure the new battery is close to the motherboard and that its leads
do not touch anything they shouldn't or stick up too far-- you don't want
them scraping against the power supply when it is replaced.

Once the power supply is replaced, you can turn ON the computer and
restore your Control Panel settings.
