Sidewalks are a different breed, they are what we term "prescriptive
easements". That means that the sidewalk is owned by the property owner, is
taxed as part of their property, and may (depending on the local zoning
ordinances) or may not be maintained by the property owner. However, the
easement allows those who have a need to travel across your property to use
the sidewalk to do so. Easements are also placed on a property for utility
installment and repair, gas line and electric line meter reading etc.
Property rights must be respected but the property owner cannot force anyone
with a legitimate use of the easement off of it.
