Arkain,
Of course I'm interested. We even manage to agree on many key aspects.
I've got other things going on at the moment, but would love to brainstorm
with you for now. Much of what I'm learning now has direct relevance to
this, and in a few months, who knows?
I will disagree with you on one point though, that Woz himself couldn't
design the successor. If he were to design it, and call it the Apple4 (to
those of you that don't know, there was an a3, which was a big flop), that
would be the uncontested successor to the Apple2.
Can one of us do that? Now, that will be a bit more difficult, but I
think it can be done in everything but name. I was suprised when I found
that the 'economies' of scale that most think impossible, are in fact quite
reachable at the hobbyist level. The most important part, the printed
circuit boards, can be bought cheaply in quantities even as low as 30-40. If
enough people wanted it, and you could all agree on a design, there is
nothing holding you back.
What's more, Apple as a company, has at times seemed much more amicable
towards its hobbyist/fan base than any other company, or as far as that
goes, industry that I have ever read about. Sure, they won't license the Mac
roms to clone manufacturers, but maybe the Apple? Or at least they might
tolerate it being called the Apple 4, who knows? That's another thing
someone would have to work on.
