    I wish I knew enough to confirm or deny your suspicions, but I'm barely
literate with digital circuitry, and  monitors/vide cards are at least
partly analog. What I can tell you is this, many modern SVGA monitors can do
all but the strangest video modes you can think of. The problem stems not
from the monitor being incapable of displaying the chosen resolution, but
from the video card being unable to format the signal in an understandable
way. In any event, I wouldn't mind sidestepping the issue completely, by
coming up with an affordable VGA/SVGA capable video card for the apple.
