Re: Apple II/e newbie - please help
I don't remember Apple using Rockwell chips. Perhaps it is a
replacement. The 65c02 has some advantages over the older 6502
but mostly in opcodes and some timing. IIRC, the Rockwell chip
has some extra opcodes which the original owner may have used
for some reason. People used the Apple II for so many different
things, some of which may surprise you.
This system sounds like an older 2e and may not have the
enhanced rom images. In this case, it will work more like the
older Apple II instead of the newer 2c and enhanced 2e. This
may not be a bad thing, for now. The biggest difference, IIRC
is the lack of mousetext characters. I don't remember the full
details of upgrading to an enhanced IIe. I think you replace the
roms, cpu and a 64k 80 column card. I'm sure someone will
correct me here if I am wrong though. I may have the parts here
in an unused IIe which I could part with pretty cheap if you
decide you want the enhanced system.
