There are several options you have.
1) Download the GS/OS 6.0.1 disk images from Apple's FTP site, DiskCopy
the second disk image onto an 800K disk, and try to boot from it. If you
can't, take it over to the Mac, copy all the files to a folder on the hard
disk, reformat the disk as ProDOS from the Finder, and copy the files
back. You won't be able to squeeze any more onto it than what is already
there, but you can at least see what it's like.
2) Get a Focus hard drive or a SCSI card and hard drive and boot from
that. The Focus drive has the OS already installed. For a SCSI hard drive,
you'll need to reformat it and install the OS with the disk images from
Apple's FTP site.
3) Get a Mac to use as a file server. Particularly old ones are good for
this. Install the AppleShare 3 server software on it (you can use
AppleShare 2 if it's really old, like a Mac SE) and the necessary Apple II
setup files (under custom install). Set up the IIgs for AppleTalk, connect
it to the server, and put the GS/OS files on it (the server). This is the
way I have mine set up right now. I won't go into detail on how to set up
the file server in this post. It's a pretty lengthy process.
