Re: Can I make my new HD bootable on my IIe?

To boot the HD always, I recommend slot seven. You may have some
luck with slot 5, I don't know as I don't use that setup. For
the HD to be bootable, it needs two things. Until you are sure
of this, leave the HD in slot 5 so you can boot off the floppy.

The HD (or any disk) reads block zero when it first boots. This
block and block 1 are reserved for the boot loader code although
usually block 1 is all zeros. If your formatter does not put the
loader code here, you can either find one that does or use a
block editor to replace it from a floppy. Most of the standard
utilities actually put the code there so this is less of a worry.
Now you need at least two files in the root directory. The main
file is Prodos. It is a SYS file and I suggest the lately version
as it's the most reliable. Prodos will load and setup itself as
necessary then it looks for the first *.system file in the base
directory. On many disks, this is Basic.system, for a HD I
suggest something like Prosel or ECP8. Personally, I prefer ECP8
since it uses a CLI but many users prefer the menu capabilities
of Prosel.
