It sounds like the hard drive is not spinning up fast enough.

Try pressing control-reset when you see the inital screen, then wait
10 seconds and hit Command-Apple-Control-Reset (the Command
key is the same as the Apple key in post-Mac terminology).

If this works, I have a few suggestions on how to make this
process automatic.
