This is almost always caused by not having enough memory. Try holding
down the shift key while booting to see if it starts without Inits/DAs

By upgraded, do you mean replaced the Apple one with another brand?
If so what kind.?

8 bit mode only really needs 64 to 128k so even with no memory card this
should work fine. So a bad memory card probably wouldn't effect this.
