Maybe you were accessing Ground via http:// and got a corrupted
download. Ground (and other ftp sites) should be accessed via ftp:// .

If there continues to be a problem downloading .shk, .dsk, and other Apple II
type files, you may be able to fix things by defining .shk, .dsk, ..., etc.
files as having a .bin MIME type (in Windows or in your browser).

An alternative is to use UnCook to remove Text mode corruption. (See
http://www.grin.net/~cturley/gsezine/GS.WorldView/v2000/Apr/index.html and
click on "Download Help".)

I downloaded the file GIFVIEW1.2.SHK from Ground, moved it to our IIgs,
and unshrinked fine with GS-ShrinkIt. It works okay and, on a IIe or //c
would be pretty nice to have as a way to get .gif files into viewable hires
or DHR files.

On a IIgs, you are much better off using SuperConvert to go from .gif to
super-res and, then, using The Graphics Exchange to convert super-res to
hi-res. These programs are easier to use and a good deal more flexible-- i.e.
you are likely to get decent results with minimal hassle.

The Graphics Exchange is available on Asimov as TGE.sdk at
ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/incoming/ . This is a 3.5" whole-disk
archive you can unshrink to diskette using 8-bit ShrinkIt or GS-ShrinkIt.

Not directly. You could use Convert 3200 to go from .bmp to super-res
and TGE to go from super-res to hi-res.

I do not; but, the info is probably available on the net somewhere via a
search.
