The G4 has an advanced architecture and that is an advantage.
It can surpass the performance of a much higher clocked
Pentium III or Athlon for certain software. But at a certain point,
these advantages can be eclipsed if the competing processor
has a much higher clock speed. My point is that AMD's Athlon
is probably the first processor (at 1Ghz) that has reached this
point. This is a 2:1 clock rate advantage over the fastest G4.
No matter how much better the G4 is and even if it can keep
up in SOME software with half the clock speed, in MOST
applications, the Athlon will beat it. It might not be able to
beat it with the same clock speed, but with twice the clock
speed it would.
