The problem's not the cpu, it's the compatibility with
older soft/hardware which holds it back. If the system
never had to go to 'real' mode and could run in it's native
mode full time things would be fine. To get around this
the software (read OS) providers can fix most of this.
Of course, the Bios is also another problem as it also
runs in 'real' mode.

Of course, the bottleneck, as always, is the lack of
compatibility between software while changing system's.
Believe it or not, but Win 9x and it's Visual programming
was designed to help make this type of change. If the
program's are executed by the OS then only the OS needs
to be modified. Of course, WIndows still has a long way
to go since many programs tend to use their own coding.

In this case, I think Apple had it right with the GS.
As much as I hate to admit it, by offering 8 bit emulation
they had opened the door to growth while allowing for
users to adapt. Too bad they didn't walk through the
door they opened.
