Re: Apple and the Holy War

I agree with your assertion Apple blew it. The G4 was a great chip for
a few months. Now what are they going to do? They can't say our machine
is just as fast as a 1GHz chip. The architecture and structure of the G4
might bring it close. Unless they come out with a G5 or something a lot
of PC owners may include this arguement as to why their machines should
be bought rather than Macs.

They really should have maintained the Apple// line. This would have
allowed them to develop the Macs as the high end workstation line. Most
Apple// owners and former owners do not think too highly about Apple
these days. Almost all went out and bought PCs (obviously) after the //
line was killed off. What happened to "The customer is always right"?
They really shot themselves in the foot. Rather than give the customers
what they wanted (the Apple//) they gave them what Apple wanted (higher
priced Macs).

In addition to my GS I also own three 68K Macs (two work and one is for
parts) and two older PCs. Before my harddrive died I was using the GS
more than the Macs because the software and hardware were easier to
configure. Now though I use my newer PC mostly with Linux for the same
reasons. Comparing the Mac to a machine running Windoze I'd say the Mac
would be better for ease of use and stability. Comparing it to Linux
(particularly the latest RedHat) I'd say the reverse would be more
accurate.

The real question would be what machine would I buy new? Assuming I had
the cash I would buy one of the new AMD machines. If research had
continued on the Apple// I would probably buy an uptodate model. A Sun,
Sparc, or Dec would be a maybe. A Mac would be a no. For a used machine
I would consider any of them but would not go beyond $500.

To conclude... Jobs has shot himself in the foot so often, I'd like to
know how many toes he has left. ;-)
