Well, I agree about the closed systems being the death of
many great computers. But I think better design does account
for something. The PC kept many of the better qualities
while upgrading CPU abilities. Once the 386 and better
memory management came along things improved drastically.
The next best addition was the inclusion of the co-processor
in the cpu. I always disliked the SX chips.
