Three elements of OS9 come to mind immediately.
Apple's new 'Update clock via Network Time Server' function in the
Date&Time control panel.
Apple's new 'Software Update' control panel, which periodically polls an
Apple server to see if your system software is in need of an update.
Sherlock 2, which I believe periodically checks to see if there are new
search engine upgrades available.
All of these functions can be disabled from within their respective
control panel/application programs, IIRC.
