If it couldn't run classic software Over 50% of the intended market would be
lost.

This would be an excellent way to approach the project, but what about
making the GS part of the firmware (in a more advanced form) and making the
others an option?

If you were to design the new 64 bit machine as a Super GS and plan the new
design for future expansion your initial expences down. There are enough
hardware and software gurus on this ng that we should be able to accomplish
this goal. I think we should set up a group to accomplish this.
