Formatting itself will not install ADU's genericSCSI driver.
It is the partition command that does the trick. You
mentioned that the old ADU will partition. Try using the
old ADU first to set up one partition, formatting that
partition, then zeroing it.

Now take that drive to the new ADU and try to repartition
it. Hopefully, the new ADU will now do the trick and
install the genericSCSI driver for the Mac.

If you had to do it on the Mac, I do know that older
versions of the Mac formatting software (such as under
Mac System 6) will generate 16k partition that's
invisible on the IIGS Finder. However, these old
formatters are also keyed to Apple brand drives so
to get them to work requires patches. You thus need
an old Mac system software with an old formatter and
an old Mac formatter patch.

Me too. Have you tried partitioning, formatting, and
zeroing the drive on a PC first? This may destroy the
Mac data that's causing ADU to have problems with
the drive.

Also, which SCSI card do you have? ADU will not
work properly with the RamFAST SCSI card. With
such a card, ADU cannot partition. You have to do it
with the RamFAST utility. Sadly, that utility does not
support instaling the genericSCSI driver for the Mac.
