Hmm...depending on your needs, you might not need to "reinvent the wheel."
A few years back, I threw together a double Hi-Res character generator that
lets you load an image (either uncompressed or compressed) and then add text
to it with simple PRINT commands, accept INPUT from the user, etc. I
originally put it under a "free for non-profit use, but check with me first
for commercial use" license; now it's under the less-restrictive GNU General
Public License. I'll post it to comp.binaries.apple2; you can also grab it
from http://salfter.dyndns.org/dhrchargen.bxy (should start downloading as
soon as you key it in or click on the link in your newsreader).
It implements 80-column text in a font that duplicates the Apple II's normal
character set. On a IIe or IIc with a monochrome monitor, there's no
telling the difference between its output and the normal 80-column display,
other than it's a little slower (with 8x the data to blast to the screen and
more math to do, it'll be a little slower).
If nothing else, it might serve as a jumping-off point for your own work
(but please heed the terms of the GPL if you do this...see
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.txt for details).
