I  can't help you with the more complicated problems, but it's pretty common
for a drive that has sat for 10 or 15 years to stick and not spin up. Remove
the drive and give it a snap with your wrist. The idea is to use the inertia
of the platters to budge them a bit, so rotate the drive in the plane of the
platters and suddenly reverse direction.
