     The ProDOS 8 version which you mention is one I've never come across.
ProDOS v1.9 does not care about AppleTalk; and, as you say, neither does
v2.0.3 as included with System 6 (i.e. the P8 file in the System/ folder
which can be copied and renamed as PRODOS).  Was v2.0.3 ever released
anywhere except as part of System 6?

     Regarding AppleTalk: it's a collection of system glitches waiting to
happen. Ripping out every vestige of the thing will save untold hours of
hassle.
