This was in an article as well, but I don't remember from where I got
it. Could have been Nibble or Call-Apple or inCider. I looked for it,
but couldn't find it.

That's odd, I'm sure the program SAM does require a card in the Apple
II. There are other versions of the program too, for other computers
(C64 I remember, but others were mentioned in the docs as well) that
does not need extra hardware, but for the Apple it does, even though
the name (Software Automatic Mouth) does suggest otherwise.
